I took a chance with this since all the others (Onkyo, Samsung, Sony) seemed either to problematic or not robust enough for the price. The box was huge but everything inside was really well packaged. I set it all up really quick without the need for the instructions which were either on a Quick guide sheet or the included CD-ROM manual. I used the YPAO mic for auto calibration and from that point everything just worked. I have my PS3, Xbox360 and Comcast 3D DVR box (as well as my old Sony mini-disc player) hooked up to it which in turn is hooked up to my 73" 3DTV. The remote while confusing at first has alot of options and is organized by section. I tested the 7.1 channel sound and 3D capabilities by popping in Tron Legacy. It was amazing both picture and sound was perfect for my medium sized living room. The subwoofer is very powerful and I have the volume set a tad higher the 1 or 2. No way in hell would I need to turn it up... After trying one from a different company which did not work for video as well, and had multiple issues, I had to return and get the yamaha. The sound quality is breathtaking. The device also looks great, all black with Yamaha logos. I have the unit for past 8 months and I have all my devices connected to Yamaha receiver and then a HDMI connection to Samsung 46" 1080p TV. I have a Panasonic Blu ray player, google TV and a Panasonic VCR (yes a VCR) connected to the receiver. I also have a Audio cable for connecting an android phone and iphone connected to it. The subwoofer is awesome. I have watched few movies to test (Narnia, Mary Poppins, willy Wonka chocolate factory). I stream lot of shows through this. I don't have Cable TV, but have OTA system. The Yamaha system has no issues with any of the inputs. The Google TV remote also controls the yamaha... I upgraded to this system because an old Sony All-in-one was dying and I wanted something I could connect more components to -- especially my turntable. The main selling point for me was that, although the system is branded as a Home Theater in a box, it is VERY important to know that the speakers can be used with ANY stereo receiver, should something go wrong with one thing before the other. My old Sony was useless because the speakers it came with were only compatible with THAT Sony unit. I'll never make that mistake again. And the quality of these speakers is stellar. No more tinny treble and over-thunderous bass. I do wish it had an EQ on the front panel, rather than having to do it onscreen, but hey - it least it HAS an EQ, which is more than I can say for many of the cheaper all-in-ones. This is what you get in the giant box it ships in: Yamaha model YST-SW216 10" side port sub Yamaha speaker model NS-AP6500M, which are the front left and right speaker Yamaha speaker model NS-AP6500E, which are the two rear channels, plus the large center channel Yamaha home theater receiver model RX-V471 Cheap low gauge speaker wire I decided to go with this system, because it was cheaper, than buying a receiver separately, then adding speakers by a good chunk of change. Overall, Yamaha put a good package together. This is a large system, so two people are needed to move it into your home. In my case, I took it in piece by piece to the living room. I bought this HTIB because the speakers seemed to be larger than the little ones pictured in other HTIB systems. I'm a Yamaha fan, and have had many Yamaha receivers, so this seemed like the proper set up for me. Glad I went with this system over others with smaller speakers. In my experience, it's always better to have more than enough speaker, as opposed to not enough. I have this system integrated with an Epson 8350 projector and 100" screen, and could not be happier. The sound is outstanding, and when set up using Yamaha's YPAO, you can't go wrong. The subwoofer provides adequate base for my theater area which is about 12' wide and 17' deep. The center channel is not overpowering, and if you use the YPAO setup, all volume is controlled by the receiver. Huge plus - the receiver has a USB input on the front. Unlike conventional speakers, which radiate sound in a single direction, these speakers use Articulated Array driver positioning and Stereo Everywhere technology to deliver balanced sound throughout your listening area. We use one pair for the surround speakers in our theater system, and a pair in each of the other rooms of our home. Although we are longtime Bose fans, we decided to audition these in an audio store as we had been disappointed in a Bose center channel speaker we had purchased previously, (based on reputation, we didn't listen first!). We were favorbly impressed in the store and have been very pleased with them in our home. Regardless of room decor, the speakers produce clean, stereo sound. (Its possible to identify orchestral instruments and their location!) These speakers are very linear above 80-90Hz, to the audible limits. They drop off rapidly below about 80Hz. Bass frequencies are adequately reproduced for orchestral music but will need to be augmented for heavy bass or special cinematic effects. I have much larger speakers for my L, R and center - and the 161s compliment them perfectly. I can hear very detailed sound coming from them - perfect for effects in movies. I'm not sure I'd use these as my primary speakers in my living room, but for surround applications, or small stereo needs, they fit the bill perfectly. They're attractive, solidly built, and easily mount to walls using the included wall brackets. There always seems to be someone out there who sets their surround settings to "large", pumps up the bass, then complains that two 2.5 inch drivers in small vented plastic enclosures "have no lows", and that the sound is distorted. Neither the VCS 10 center channel or the 161s will play ear-busting levels -- the trade off of small drivers in small enclosures, and the theatre surround settings and bass management must be set accordingly. Doing this, the Bose 161s (especially when paired with the VCS 10) can produce clear focused dialog and convincing surround effects in smaller rooms. Can you do "better"? Sure, larger enclosures, with bigger drivers can play louder and lower but that doesn't mean the Bose don't deserve consideration on the...
