I purchased this system to replace my Denon AVR-788 receiver. Onkyo had several models that I looked at, however I decided on this one because it is network capable, has the features I was looking for and is firmware upgradeable. As far as I can tell it uses a 10/100 based NIC. Out of the box and connected to my network I had access to few services, however after completing the update I had access to vTuner, Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius/XM iRadio, Slacker, Mediafly, Napster iRadio, Spotify, Last.FM, and AUPEO. There is a "My Favorites" feature where you can save up to 40 Internet radio stations. The system suppoprts DLNA certified media servers, Windows Media Player 11 and 12, and Windows Media Connect 2.0.

It can handle the following audio formats, MP3, WMA, WMA lossless, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG and LPCM. I could stream audio files from my PC straight to the receiver or use a plugged in USB device such as a flash drive. I also have a LG N1T1 (1 Terabyte) NAS on my network. I use... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful sound and appearance, December 10, 2011

This review is from: Onkyo HT-S8409 7.1-Channel Network A/V Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
I am not anywhere near an expert on speakers. I wanted to buy my husband a home theatre system to go along with the Sony Bravia XBR55HX929 I bought him as a Christmas surprise, so I started doing a lot of research. Initially, I totally intended to buy one of those rinky dink HTiB sets but after many (10-15) trips into best buy asking 34325543 questions, I decided to spend more money and buy a quality system. What attracted me to this particular set was only the appearance of the speakers themselves. I needed "tall" front speakers due to the design of our set up, and these ones looked really nice. I was quite surprised to find, when I opened the box, that this set it just onkyo's TX-NR609 receiver and their SKS-HT870 speaker set.

There's nothing I can say about this that the reviewer before me hasn't, other than the box it was delivered in is HUGE. I didn't measure it, but I'm 5'6 and it came up to at least my under arms and was about 3 feet wide. Set up was fairly... Read more

I was very impressed with the Entertainment Center. Very easy to hook up! and the built in Network with Pandora and all those internet radio programs work like a champ. The surround sound is very intense and crystal clear for any setup. Regular Cable, Video Games, and even Blu-Ray! all sound fantastic. The sub woofer is actually more gigantic than the picture leads on. Its MASSIVE!!! Sounds Great, and has a super glossy front with a pretty wood finish. Very classy Looking! The Tower speakers are at least 4 ft tall and look very professional and sound terrific! Love everything about this system and Amazon has the best price on all the internet. Even better than NewEgg.

Are You Ready To Buy A Home Theater Audio System?

When you desired to owner home theater. Here are several tips to help you find the right home theater audio system system for you.

LG LHB336 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV1. Spend some quality time with the room you are going to put your new home theater audio system. Believe it or not but the room is as much a component in your home theater system as any of the electronics you will ever buy. Ask yourself which room you will be putting your new system in. Consider whether this room is going to be used solely for you system or will it be used for other activities. Will there be any size considerations for the components and speakers you plan to use with the dimensions of the room?

Samsung HT-BD7200 Bluetooth Speaker Bar Home Theater System (Black)Consider drawing a map of your room and sketch the possible placements of your furniture, components and speakers. Measure the room's dimensions and write them down. Make a list of all the inputs you currently have and will continue to use. Make a list of the inputs you intend to add to your new audio system. You should write down which components are going to need cables and wires. Also, write down the approximate lengths of those cables and wires. Once all this is worked out carry this information and map with you when you go out to buy your new audio system.

It is important to arrange your room for best picture and sound by reducing screen and hard surface reflections. Do not forget the TV picture is not very pretty when light is reflecting off the screen. Also, audio is not so wonderful when sound waves are reflecting off hard surfaces like bare walls and windows.

2. Select what you want to experience when you settle down on your couch with your partner and a big bowl of popcorn. Ruminate on the experience you want before you ruminate on your budget. Is it stereo, surround sound, or primarily movies?

3. Spend a few hours looking around on key sites and forums and you will know more than most. Friends, family, trade and consumer magazines and inquiring jaunts to your favorite electronic store will help you gain customer leverage. Do not buy anything at this point. Get as much information stuffed into your brain that will help you when the time comes for you to buy your system.

4. Revisit the drawing of your room and your research. You will ultimately end with two, possibly three choices. By now you should be a confident consumer. Decide what you absolutely want.

5. There are valuing out there the trick is to be an expert on home theater audio systems. Keep your eyes open for great deals. Big electronic stores offer promotions, online manufacturers can offer radically lower markup than retailers and online auctions offer access to deal all over the world.

6. Don't get stuck with a mismatched TV size for your room. The key here is that balance. If the TV is too big then you tend to see the details of the screen, not the image. If the TV is too small you might feel like you're sitting in the nosebleed section. Here is an equation to help you decide the best screen size for your room.

2.5 x The size of you TV screen = Suggested viewing distance

For example: If your TV is 36" then according to the equation you should sit about 90" from your TV (36 x 2.5 = 90). Note that this chart in only a reference.

Good luck finding the home theater audio system to fit your needs. Enjoy shopping and make the experience fun.
