4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised, July 23, 2010

Where to start...

Nerd's notes:
First of all, for those that get the Sony BDV-E570 that was manufactured earlier in the year, it may have been before they fixed the issues with the software upgrade. I believe I received such a model. Being the overly concerned nerd that I am, I read the manual. It is not very specific, but does tell you to plug in the network cable to perform the upgrade. Read into this and you must assume to NOT PERFORM THE UPGRADE OVER WIFI. Well, you can take that a step further, (which of course I did), and you can download the update directly from Sony, place the files on a blank CD-R, then place the disk in the player and perform the update that way (it auto detects that the disk contains update files very nicely). This worked perfectly. No issues like the horror stories I have been hearing about this model (earlier this year), and the next model up the BDV-E770W. Due to the age of the model I received, there were two updates to perform,... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars It works pretty well, but...., September 7, 2010
This review is from: Sony BDV-E570 Blu-ray Player Home Entertainment System (Electronics)
I bought this system to replace my Sony 5 speaker system with a 5 CD/DVD changer and a receiver, which was getting a little dated. It does some great things that I couldn't do with my other system, but there are also some drawbacks. I appreciated most of the reviews on this website, but here are my 2 cents:

pros: Can watch Netflix "watch instantly" movies and shows
can listen to Pandora
can watch photos, videos from a flash drive
sound is pretty good, comparable to my last system

cons: It cannot play my iPod (5th gen iPod classic). Watch out for this: the system can play some iPod's, but not others.
It cannot play European (other than region 1) DVD's. I now have to hook up my European DVD player to the television because the unit is not a real receiver.
Does FM, not AM radio

Overall, it was a good buy for me since I got it on Amazon for $350, so I can't complain too much.

Right out of the box, it was very easy to set up as long as you the patience to find a way to run the rear speakers with hiding the speaker wire. Also, the speaker wire to the the rear speakers is too short to place them far enough back to optimize the 5.1 sound.

I Wish that the subwoofer was powered. The passive subwoofer gives good sound, not great sound. The 1,000 watt system easily fills the large family room with quality sound.

The system has the minimum amount of inputs, but lacks an audio out-put to run a set of B speakers to another room in the house.

I haven't tried the WiFi conection to the internet yet. I'll update my review after I try the WiFi feature.

Overall, It's a good system for anyone looking for a complete Blu-Ray video & DTS 5.1 audio right out the box. I got the best price from Amazon (Amazon stands behind any product that you purchased fom them) and it was deilver in two days. Other than the rear speaker wires (it's... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 5.1 surround system. Takes up little space., April 7, 2011

This review is from: Yamaha YHT-494BL 5.1-Channel Complete Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
This yamaha 5.1 surround system is amazing. It really packs a punch. It takes up little room too.
It's just the sound bar, which blends in right below your tv. 2 satellite cube speakers and a 100 watt powered sub. It took me a while to wire everything and then you have a set up menu to get best performance from the size of space your in. You have like 7 movie options and 7 music options to use. Simply try each one to determine the best sound. Also, the receiver is very nice. The highs sound crisp and clear. The mids are ok. The lows sound great once you find best area for the sub.
I am by no means an audiophile, but I know what sounds good and yamaha hits the mark. Very high
quality construction and performance. Great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!, March 6, 2011

This review is from: Yamaha YHT-494BL 5.1-Channel Complete Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
This unit is amazing, it's my second home theater system in 10 years. My first home theater system was the Sony DAV300, good system, but nothing can touch this Yamaha. The clarity, the bass, many many functions, addition of many connections for everyday components that you use everyday, and value. Plus, you don't have to worry about any of the speakers "drowning out" or distorting when increasing the volume. I have always wanted to buy a Yamaha system since i first learned about home theater systems, but the cost always made me choose Sony which is good too. I am so glad that i finally have the Yamaha HTIB that is more advanced and better than i imagined for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best surround sound system for a studio apartment, November 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-494BL 5.1-Channel Complete Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
I started out looking for an entry level surround sound system but got to weighed down with all the components that go with an entry level system so I had to consider my apartment size as a guide for purchasing a system, first. I wanted a sound bar and a wireless sub that would connect to my tv as the whole system and came up with such a system from VIZIO but I backed out at the last minute because the decoding was through my tv not the sound bar. I did more looking and found three other systems that offered similar options but in the end the Yamaha YHT-494BL was the best choice for me as I have such a small apartment. There's also room to expand by upgrading the receiver and speakers. I recently added in-ceiling speakers to my system to use as the rear channels so there is no speakers hanging on the walls or standing on the floor. The unit that I purchased was extremely inexpensive and had me worried about defects and other things associated with extremely inexpensive stereo... Read more

This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5300 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver and Speaker Package with iPod Dock (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this HTIB system to replace my Sony STR-Se501 that I have had for over 10 years. That system has served me well, but recently the center speaker would occasionally cut out requiring me to tap on the top of the receiver to get the sound to come back. When working that system sounded pretty good, but I knew I had a problem when I played God of War 3 and I had a very hard time hearing the speech of some characters, even when my center speaker was working. I was all set to get the HT-S5200, but decided to hold off when I saw the HT-S5300 was coming out with better features. After getting the system setting up, I am glad I was patient.

The HT-S5300 is an excellent system for the price, even a much better deal when purchasing from online sites that give you a pretty hefty discount as opposed to the regular retail price. Everything comes packed neatly and securely in one large box and the basic instructions of hooking everything up is explained clearly on a full... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Sound, But Several Issues, June 22, 2010
By
mrcatman (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5300 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver and Speaker Package with iPod Dock (Black) (Electronics)
This product has great promise - if they release fixes to the issues below. We even got a replacement receiver and subwoofer to see if we had a lemon, but (with the exception of one issue), all the problems were there in the replacements as well. We will be returning this product. Here's why...

1) S5300 doesn't "up-convert" composite/component formats to HDMI
I didn't learn this until I bought it (my fault), but I wanted to pass it along so you don't make the same mistake. I confirmed this in their manual and with a call to Onkyo. If you connect any non-HDMI device to the Onkyo, it will only send it out the same way. It will not up-convert it to HDMI.

If you connect a composite device (say, a kid's Leap Frog video game), you need a composite cable out from the Onkyo to your TV. Same for component. So if you use all 3 input types, that means you need 3 outputs from the Onkyo to the TV - HDMI, composite, and component. This also means you have to change the TV... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid and excellent new 2010 product from Onkyo, May 15, 2010
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5300 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver and Speaker Package with iPod Dock (Black) (Electronics)
I ordered the system on Thursday morning and got it delivered on Friday by 1pm thru Prime members 2Day shipping. Definitely amazed by the delivery service earlier than expected date.

Easy to setup the system in my home which took less than an hour to set it up. Comes with very easy to understand setup guide.

Watched The Dark Night on it and I must say the I was surprised (even sounds great with onkyo's crappy speaker cables) with the surround sound quality. Subwoofer is a monster. I was doing research on Onkyo's HTIB systems for last few months and I must say that this system serves all my purpose blu ray, digital video to upscaled HDMI videos.

Cons: None so far for this product.

This comes with iPod dock so that's also a plus for my need. The system comes with a crappy speaker cables same as Onkyo's other HTIBs. You must buy a good quality speaker cables 14 or 16Gauge depends upon your room setup.

Onkyo's HTIB for this price... Read more
