4.0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For!, April 1, 2011
This review is from: Sony SA-VS310 Home Theater System (Electronics)
Okay, so, there's virtually no reviews of these speakers to be found online, so I went out on a limb buying these, though I own only Sonly products if I can help it because - hey, let's face it: Sony makes great stuff! Some peoplesay Sony is overpriced. I say that's a load of old horsefeathers. Apple is overpriced.

Okay, so $550 (how much I paid for the set from Sony Style in Boston, MA) for a 5.1 home theater speaker setup that doesn't include a receiver or bundled blu-ray player like most of the rest of Sony's home theater offerings, is definitely a little pricey, but once I got these babies hooked up to my STR-DN2010, oh man, they were smokin' and tokin'! I got serious goosebumps from the sound. In a word: Amazing.
TV? Amazing. DVD? Amazing. Playstation, Xbox, and Wii? Amazing. MP3 player? Amazing. I'm no audiophile but whether it was a consequence of the receiver (of which I've seen receive a few none-too-favorable reviews) or just the speakers themselves, for... Read more

These speakers are great. I'm very conscious of sound and like really good 5.1 speakers. It took me a while to decide on these. I liked the look but was worried about the sound quality, being that they were very small speakers. I was able to try them in a local BestBuy, which isn't always the easiest to do, and they sounded good. I bought them from Amazon after many weeks of deliberation. When I got them there was no doubt, they were great. The sound that comes out of these small speakers is pretty impressive. You should always keep in might that these are not large professional speakers. They produce really good sound, but your need a decent receiver. Nothing will ever be as good as large speakers, but these are perfect for those of us that like great sound and love small stylish speaker systems.

Pros
Great sound from small speakers
Very stylish design

Cons
Can't buy speaker stands for the rear speakers

2.0 out of 5 stars no mid range, June 26, 2011

This review is from: Sony SA-VS310 Home Theater System (Electronics)
i got this to upgrade my system. the sub works great, you can adjust the freq. response and the power output. the center and shelf speakers have good high sound, but they have no midfange at all. if you turn off the sub they sound like a tin can. so i use my old shelf speakers and the sony sub.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound and vibrant picture!, August 9, 2011

This review is from: Sony BDV-E780W Blu-Ray Disc Player Home Entertainment System (Black) (Electronics)
We wanted to upgrade our old DVD home theater system and were looking for something with great sound. The Sony BDV-E780 certainly delivers - we noticed an immediate improvement in the quality of audio from our old Samsung system upon inserting our first CD into the system. We were blown away by the entire experience as we watched our first Blu Ray. The picture and sound were movie theater quality. Really an amazing buy.

Appearance-wise, the system looks very nice. The main unit is a nice glossy black with sensory buttons. The onscreen display in minimal and looks nice. Most of the detailed options are displayed on your tv screen.

Initial set-up was easy enough with color coded cables and a walk through upon turning on the system. There is even a self calibrating microphone, which helps the speakers calibrate to meet your needs based upon where you typically sit to watch movies. The manual is quite long, however, so I imagine advanced customizing of the... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great mid-range home theatre, slightly flawed, September 23, 2011
This review is from: Sony BDV-E780W Blu-Ray Disc Player Home Entertainment System (Black) (Electronics)
I've had this unit for a few weeks - pretty much had to buy some surround system to watch Star Wars on Blu Ray, and I picked this one. There's a lot that I really like about this setup, and a lot that was pretty irritating about it, though I'm hopeful that with a little working around problems, it'll work out great.

Things I love about it:
- Very easy to set up. Everything connected the obvious way, so I had it set up in 15 minutes, without bothering to read the manual.
- The included sound check (with microphone) is great - it made it painless to get levels adjusted. All it takes is connecting the microphone, picking the menu item, and listening while it makes each speaker hiss in turn for a few minutes. Much easier than using a manual meter, playing a test CD/DVD, and crawling around configuration menus.
- UI is well designed, easy to use, and looks good.
- The DVD player is physically quite nice looking.
- The apps (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) work... Read more

Having recently moved, my old 2.1 system was no longer sufficient and running wires was a total 'no no' !!
This system seemed to have the best reviews and actually had the wireless rear speaker device included, unlike some other systems that trick you into buying and then you find you have to fork out another $100 for the wireless transmitter !
Set up was easy and immediately it recognized the wireless speakers without any issue at all.
I was familiar with the interface as my old BluRay player uses basically the same. Netflix and all the app's work great. I have a wired Ethernet system throughout my house so cannot comment on streaming speeds via a wireless connection.
My only negative would be that the speakers are SO light, that they are easily knocked over by my kitty kats and when cleaning. Also because they don't feel substantial, one thinks they would sound crappy, but actually I have no complaints about sound at all. Not a crackle from the wireless speakers,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st time neophyte buyer of a Home Theater System, May 24, 2009
By
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this unit to complement a Samsung LN52a550 HDTV. Didn't feel there was enough sound from the unit to complement the samsungs outstanding video. Shopped for reasonably priced HTIB units and decided (despite cautions that most didn't perform) to give this unit a try. In my wildest expectations I never thought this unit would perform up to its marketing description. Placed in a den of that is approx. 15 x 25 and playing a Dolby DVD, it placed me in a cinema that provides sound effects that truly astounded. I'll qualify this by saying that I'm a audio neophyte but for this sound at this amount of money I am truly impressed.

Be aware that this Sony unit is being used with a Samsung HDTV and consequently the transition between DVD usage & HDTV usage (must change input source) is a bit bothersome. I found that in order to obtain full surround sound from the unit when receiving audio only from you TV (not from the DVD) you must purchase a digital optical cable... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars (UPDATE: If you own a wii. S-AIR will interfere with your wii remote.) - Finally found the One., July 13, 2009

This review is from: Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
(UPDATE:
I just found out that the S-AIR technology interferes with the wii remote. The cursor on the screen will jump all over the place and the sound on the wii remote will get cut out. It very noticeable playing Super Mario Galaxy when selecting your file on the file menu. So if you own a wii you will be very disappointed. Turning off the home theater or taking out the S-AIR cart on the back of the receiver solves the problem. Way to go Sony. I think you did this on purpose. NEW RATING: 4 STARS. Original rating was 5 stars.)

This Home theater system is great. The wireless system is nearly perfect, so far only a couple of weird click noises, but I have been using this 24/7 and it has worked beautifully. The design is really elegant for the price. Before getting this system I tried a Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System, the Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX587WC 5.1 Channel Theater System and the Sony HSS360 component system. And this system beats all of them by a mile... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, July 12, 2009
By
This review is from: Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
Got this system a couple days ago, and it just blows me away. The sound is amazing, the sub really kicks out deep bass, its looks great and the picture is crystal clear also. The rear wireless has been flawless, microwave, cordles phone does not interfere with it at all. I have this system in a medium room and sounds wonderful. Has a 5 dvd/cd changer, am/fm tuner, ipod cradle included, input in front for headphones and mp3 player, hdmi, component, composite video out and coaxil and optical input also. The romote is not universal but works only for Sony Bravia lcd's only. For the price, i recommend this unit to everyone.
