4.0 out of 5 stars The Swiss Army Knife of HTiBs, May 6, 2010

Panasonic's SC-BT230 is a vertitable jack-of-all-trades: this thing plays CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, but it also has a built-in iPod dock which is compatible with iPod, iPod Touch and iPhone for playback of music, photos *and* videos through your home theater system and TV. But wait, there's more! It also includes built-in amplification, five speakers and a subwoofer for discrete 5.1 channel surround sound, has on-board decoding of the latest audio codecs (DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD, etc.), does a nice job upconverting DVDs to 1080p resolution, streams Netflix, Amazon VOD and YouTube, and has a built-in FM tuner.

If you want to use it with a cable or satellite box, a TV's built in ATSC tuner or a gaming system, then just plug it into one of the unit's two fiberoptic digital inputs (for full 5.1 channel compatibility) or use the one analog stereo input. Set-up is pretty simple: the speaker wires are all included and all are terminated in proprietary, color-coded... Read more

The Panasonic SC-B230 is a decent product I have had this for about a week and put it through some paces. However my actual rating for this would be a 3 1/2 but since I cant seem to rate a half star here and the features of the unit I will give it the extra for the 4 star rating. You have a nice Blue Ray player which is backward compatible like the rest (DVD, CD etc) From the box to the Quick Guide to the User Manual, set up is easy and there are plenty of diagrams for those who are instructionally challenged (ie "instructions?? we dont need no instructions...I got a picture).

Set up is easy the wire and the input of the speaker are color coordinated. In fact the Speaker input to the unit is color coordinated preventing you from plugging the wrong speaker in the wrong slot. You really have to try to plug the rear to the front and vice verse. This is a plus and a minus - in my opinion. The idiot proofing great, however the end is a plug that is specific to the unit so if you... Read more

This review is from: Panasonic SC-BT230 5.1 Surround Sound System (Electronics)
I received this item about 4 days ago. I absolutely love the sound. Watched some of Star Wars Episode III and the sound is incredible. Just like being in the theater. However, one of the reasons I purchased this item is that Panasonic's website lists it as having Pandora. This is not true as of the time I am writing this review. I wrote Panasonic about this and was told that there is no exact date yet when Pandora will be online. Also, for those of you interested in the twitter that it supposedly comes with. No twitter either. As for the youtube, that's pretty cool. Netflix is sort of lame, as you only get access to the instant queue and no recommendations. We have a PS3 with Netflix and the Netflix service on that seems to be more advanced.

Also, on Panasonic's website, it lists this model as having a 3.5 mm jack so you can use your MP3 player. Not true. The back of the unit has a composite audio in. Which I wasn't that upset about since I have a converter... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great system, with a couple exceptions, June 9, 2009
By
This review is from: Sony HTSS360 5.1 channel Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
I own a new 40" Sony Bravia LCD that I hooked this system up to. I was very impressed with its sound and its wide range of features for the price! However, there were a couple areas that I feel need to be addressed.

PROS:
- Excellent sound, especially the Movie DCS mode which adds a ton of depth to any movie
- Easy setup
- Excellent integration with a Sony TV. I can fully control my LCD from the receiver remote after hooking up the HDMI cables.
- Full HDMI switching makes initial connection and switching between sources a snap. I can switch between cable and my PS3 with 1 button.
- Wide range of format handling, including Linear PCM.
- Wide range of sound modes.
- No color distortion issues when switching between HDMI sources. This seemed to be a problem in older models.

CONS:
- I found the bass to be a little lacking due to the fact that the subwoofer is passive. I swapped the included one out with this:... Read more

This review is from: Sony HTSS360 5.1 channel Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
As someone who was in the process of purchasing my first blu-ray player I was looking to upgrade my older Sony surround sound system as well. I was looking for a couple of things in a new system: One, that it had plenty of HDMI inputs and two, that it had a high-quality sound for the price point.

As for the most important item, the sound, this is a great system. People have said it is like listening to a $500-1000 system. I don't know if it sounds as good as a $1000 system, but I would say it does sound wonderful like a $500-700 system so for the price it can't be beat. The highs sound very clear and crisp and the bass is deep with depth without losing too much 'punch' or getting too 'muddy'. The only minor issue I have with sound is that when dialogue gets loud the center speaker (on rare occasions) 'flinches' and has the slightest sound like feedback. It could be the case itself vibrating as I have it sitting against the T.V. base/stand so this could be the problem as... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, good price and easy set up., May 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sony HTSS360 5.1 channel Home Theater System (Black) (Electronics)
When I recently bought a new Sony 40" LCD TV I discovered the TV speakers were better than my old cheapie surround sound system. I then bought this Sony HTSS360. I'm a long way from an audio expert but I know good sound when I hear it and this system has it all the way from the high to the low pitched sounds. I can now hear even faint sounds/sound effects I never knew existed with my old sound system. Between the new TV and this surround sound system all my existing DVD's are like watching all new movies. It may be a little on the subjective side but my movies appear to have better color and clarity than when the feed was direct from my DVD player. Very easy to set up and play using one remote with the Bravia Sync. In my case just two HDMI cables, sat box and DVD player, to the receiver and one HDMI out to the TV, easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for audiophiles, but a steal for ave. Joe on a budget, December 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo SKS-HT690 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System (Black, 6) (Electronics)
Since there is no review of these speakers anywhere on the internet I feel some added responsibility to put one up.

I am no CNET, but here we go:

The Good:

They look high end with a high gloss piano-black finish. Surprisingly powerful for the size. Music sounds good.... not just for movies.

The Bad:

Closed boxes and the connections are push terminal, which seems kind of low end. I had trouble getting my large speaker wires into the terminal. The center speaker is a bit underwhelming, but blends well if the front speakers are close enough.

The bottom line:

If you want a great bang for your buck and are on a serious budget, then these are a deal. MSRP at 450 puts them up against "The Pioneer SP-PK21BS" and the "Engery Take Classic 5.1", which is some stiff competition in the budget space (probably why they lowered the price). I would not pay $450 for these speakers simply for the connections and being closed... Read more
